Internet Security:

Resources for School and Home

In today's world, we would like to think we are safe and anonymous as we use the Internet to do research, conduct business, and communicate with friends and family. Unfortunately, our assumption is not always true. The Internet also provides a resource to people who would take advantage of the unwary.

As your Partners in Excellence, Mabton School District is very serious about and pro-active in minimizing the risk to our students, staff, and technology resources. Included in our defenses are: Firewall, Internet Filtering, Anti-Virus / Anti-spyware / Anti-Spam, and procedures to keep our resources "security patched". One of the most important defenses is KNOWLEDGE.

ThinkingChatUsersInternet Security starts with how you think, like, not believing that everything is what it appears to be. Think "secure". It is very important to avoid believing that just because it is on the Internet, doesn't make it fact. Learn and practice the art and skill of challenging what you find by using alternate resources to verify what you find. Be skeptical, very skeptical, of something that seems too good to be true. This applies to people too. Remember, people (especially strangers on chat sites) may not be who they claim to be, because the Internet enables them to hide details about themselves such as age, gender, income, location, nationality, etc.

SecuredCPUHackedCPUBeing secure is dependent on how well the computer or Internet device (blackberry, iPhone, etc) you use is secured. Your computer should always be running a current and updated Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware program. It should also be protected by a Firewall Device. It is just as important to be VERY careful in what programs you install, especially programs that you download, as they can contain hidden applications that will enable a hacker to remotely access or "harvest" information from your computer.

Your Internet Security is impacted by which web sites you browse to and whether or not you share or download files. When going to sites for the first time, be watchful for any windows that pop-up and disappear. Be very careful if a site tells you that you must install a program to view or access their files.

Below are serveral free resources available to staff, students and parents. These resources will help you become more aware of possible risks you want and need to avoid while using the Internet.
